Last Friday Congressman Scott Peters (D-CA) introduced legislation to extend the existing tax credit for producers of advanced biofuels, such as those derived from algae. The existing $1.01 per gallon tax credit expires on December 31, 2013.  While the bill clearly cannot be considered before the end of the year, tax credits are often extended retroactively.

ABO issued on statement thanking Congressman Peters for his efforts.

In proposing the legislation Congressman Peters, who chairs the Congressional Algae Caucus, seeks to maintain a policy that has encouraged entrepreneurs and investors to develop the next generation of sustainable fuels. Continuation of this tax policy would also support ongoing commercialization efforts that are already providing new jobs and economic development while improving the nation’s energy security.

Please reach out to your Member of Congress and ask him/her to cosponsor HR 3758, the Peters 2nd generation tax credit extension bill.

Another major energy company has taken interest in renewable crude oil that is made from algae. Today Sapphire Energy and Phillips 66 announced a joint development agreement that will accelerate the certification of Sapphire’s Green Crude oil for processing in traditional refineries.

This step is a vital part of introducing a new fuel to market, and Phillips 66’s interest is another sign that algae cultivation technologies are gaining steam.

Sapphire, which announced a previous deal with an oil major earlier this year, is already producing its Green Crude on a daily basis and expects commercial production by 2018. We are on the way to a new domestic supply of renewable fuels!

ABO invites all of its members to submit your peer-reviewed journal articles (authors, title, citation, abstract, author affiliations) for posting to the ABO website.  All articles published in 2012 and after are eligible for posting.  The articles should be relevant to and supportive of the goals of the ABO.

The posting should be submitted by either the senior or corresponding author of the paper. To request consideration please send us a note via ABO’s contact form with the subject line: “attn: peer review committee”.

The peer review committee will decide if the submission meets the standards of interest and relevance to the ABO peer reviewed journal publication, and ABO membership.

The submitting author is responsible for obtaining permission of the other authors and any copyright holders. The submissions, if accepted, will be posted at ABO’s Reports & Studies  webpage.

The Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) and the Culture Collection of Algae (UTEX), through the D.O.E.-sponsored Algae Testbed Public-Private-Partnership (ATP3), offer comprehensive workshops on the cultivation of microalgae, strain selection, pilot-scale cultivation, harvesting and processing, and analysis of valuable oils and co-products.

The next ATP3 workshop titled “Routine Measurement and Biochemical Analysis of Microalgal Cultures”  will be held Feb. 24‐28, 2014 at AzCATI in Mesa, Arizona.
