ABO Gives International Algae a Boost

Algae-derived fuels and products can be made almost anywhere, which means they can address energy and sustainability challenges around the globe. One of the many nations outside the United States that is taking notice is Japan. Beginning today in the Tokyo the Algae Industry Incubation Consortium, Japan (AIIC) will be holding a two day conference of international algae industry experts to discuss how algae can play a role in Japan’s energy strategy.

ABO was able to assist AIIC in gathering many of the global experts that will be attending, including several ABO member companies and board members. Intense cooperation in the United States between entrepreneurs, researchers and policy makers has helped move the algae industry toward commercial production, and international cooperation can only accelerate the industry’s development further.

Today’s press release has more details on ABO’s involvement with AIIC as well as comment from both organizations.

And if  you’d like to check in with other international developments in the algae industry be sure to check out the International Developments in Algae panel at the Algae Biomass Summit in Orlando, Florida later this month!

Arizona’s Summer of Algae 2013

As August comes to a close the Summer of Algae continues at ABO member Heliae, where Fred Tennant, the company’s VP of Business Development, presented Representative Matt Salmon (R-AZ) with a certificate of appreciation for his work advancing the algae industry.

Rep. Salmon represents the Arizona district where Heliae will soon be operating and expanding its first commercial facility.

Heliae is developing cutting-edge algae technology that will initially be used in the production of nutraceutical and personal care products. A recent interview of Heliae’s Director of Corporate Development Nick Donowitz at Nutraingredients-usa.com provides a summary of how Heliae’s technology is poised to make an impact.

The Range in Algae Expertise

Algae biofuels get a lot of attention for the sheer impact they could have on our energy economy. A renewable supply of domestic fuels would deliver enormous environmental and economic advantages. But algae companies are finding that the road to fuel production also presents the opportunity to market algae-derived feed, food and nutraceutical products. In many cases these markets can be tapped well before commercial fuel production is viable.

Today at Nutraingredients-usa.com Hank Schultz looks at the different kinds of expertise required for fuel and nutraceutical markets in the algae industry. He interviews Greg Sower, a toxicologist for Environ International on what hurdles companies face as they look to tap into various markets, and how the variability of this relatively new industry is playing out.

It’s an informative read, whether you are a new algae entrepreneur or established industry leader.

Greg Sower is also a featured speaker at the upcoming Algae Biomass Summit in Orlando, Florida September 30-October 3. Early bird registration expires Monday, August 19. Hurry and register for the largest algae conference in the world!
