Diversity and Commercial Potential of Algae – Lectures & Lab Tours at Scripps Institution of Oceanography

For this lecture series and short tours Summit attendees will take a quick bus ride from the conference hotel to the world famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) located on beautiful La Jolla Bay. We’ll have coffee and tea, then attend morning lectures in Sumner Auditorium delivered by Scripps algae faculty and prominent guest scientists in town for the Summit. Lecture topics will focus on the “Diversity and Commercial Potential of Algae” theme, including organisms from marine, freshwater and waste water systems, macroalgae (seaweeds) and a whirlwind lecture on “Commercialization of Algae – Around the World in 30 minutes..!”

After the lectures enjoy a catered lunch and refreshments on the patio overlooking the Blue Pacific, explore posters that summarize the diverse research of UCSD and SIO students and postdoctoral scientists, and network with fellow participants and SIO algae researchers. Then, follow SIO graduate student docents on tours of algae research laboratories, culture collections, analytical laboratories and a “Walk-about” leisure tour of the SIO campus. We will board the bus at 3:00-3:15 pm to return to the hotel by about 3:30-4:00 pm in time for the opening events of the Algae Biomass Summit.
