SAN DIEGO, Sept. 19, 2013
Today the Algae Biomass Organization (ABO) announced the results of a collaborative study that determined algae biofuels offer a competitive energy return on investment (EROI) and a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions when compared to petroleum and other biofuels. The study, “Life Cycle Assessment of Transportation Fuel Production from Hydrothermal Liquefaction of Algae Grown in Open Ponds,” conducted by scientists from the University of Virginia, Scripps Institute of Oceanography at the University of San Diego, Embori Group, LLC, and Sapphire Energy, Inc., examines the potential lifecycle assessment (LCA) for environmental and energy yield values of commercial scale algae-to-energy production. It is the first study of its kind to be based on real world field data from Sapphire Energy’s pilot and demonstration scale facilities in New Mexico.

As part of an ongoing effort to improve commercial scale algae biofuel production, a group of scientists, led by crude oil producer Sapphire Energy, Inc., today announced the completion of a collaborative study which identified the morphology, ultrastructure, and life history of A. protococcarum, one of the most difficult to manage algae parasites. Their findings are detailed in “Characterization of Amoeboaphelidium Protococcarum: An Algal Parasite New to the Cryptomycota Isolated from an Outdoor Algal Pond Used for the Production of Biofuel,” published today in the online scientific journal PLOS ONE. The article provides a comprehensive study of the parasite challenge facing crop protection for scaled algae cultivation in open-pond systems. These results will provide a broader understanding and promote the development of sustainable management strategies for biofuel production.

Solutions4CO2 Inc. (the “Company” or “S4CO2”) (TSX Venture: SFC), reports that EU countries have an installed base of over 8,000 Anaerobic Digesters (AD) that were developed over the last ten years with the support of government regulation and subsidies. The EU has therefore demonstrated that renewable energy generated from this source of biogas is an attractive alternative to the use of fossil fuels. Without similar forms of support, the development of this source of renewable energy in North America has been limited to 200 AD installations to date.
